Status of RefCalls.com (& TopFlops.com) for this NBA season
Thanks for coming to RefCalls.com! We are in the process of trying to figure out what we’re going to do in regard to running this site for the 2011-2012 NBA season.
During last year’s playoffs, we killed ourselves working many all-nighters while trying to prove there is a demand for the type of content we were curating, and to see if potential investors would be interested in investing. We had one potential investor in the sports industry who had expressed a very strong interest in participating, but he backed out because he didn’t want to incur any potential hassles from others in the industry that he was involved with a site like ours, which is trying to improve how games are officiated by referees.
Obviously, watching every NBA game for the best and worst calls with a very small number of volunteers who are required to work late into the night while also trying to make a living is a big challenge. Heck, even covering just some of the games each night or each week takes a ton of time. We were able to power through last season’s playoffs on pure adrenaline, determination, and savings, but to do it for a 66-game season is an entirely different proposition because it is more than a full-time job. For just one person, it’s close to 70-80 hours a week, 7 days a week.
As of now, we’re trying to figure out a model of how we can do this while also earn a living doing it. You are probably aware that earning enough Internet advertising revenue to support even one employee is a challenge, even if the site has a ton of traffic. We also know from experience there are not enough people who are willing to pay a subscription fee to gain access to this type of content.
The best bet (although it’s a long shot) is for a wealthy individual or group of folks who are passionate about sports and want to hold the refs accountable (and perhaps change sports for the better) — and have extra money laying around — to pay a fair sum for RefCalls.com & TopFlops.com to continue to run while also participating in the financial upside of these sites and its services in the future. If you fit this profile, we’d love to hear from you at staff [at] refcalls.com!
If you are just an interested fan who wants to know when RefCalls.com & TopFlops.com is able to resume its service, we ask that you provide your email address in the text box below so we can email you if, and when, it happens. Thanks!
